Prelude In most of the countries marriages are arranged and a woman has little chance of meeting her prospective bridegroom. Vatsyayana was keenly aware of this and in the Kama Sutra, he strongly advocates that the husband should approach 'his bride with as much gentleness as she desires, and treat her with great kindness and consideration so that she is no longer afraid and thus lead her subtly to the perilous brink of desire.

In those days, when everything moved at a leisurely pace,Vatsyayana suggested that for the first three days after marriage, the partners should abstain from any sexual pleasure and have food which is free of salt and chillies. For the next seven days they should take their 'bath, toilette and meals together amidst the sound of auspicious musical instruments '. On the tenth night, the male partner was supposed to allay his wife's fear and get her ready for the great event.Though today most bridegrooms would not have the patience to wait so long, without having sex with their brides on the wedding night, it is most essential that if he does not know her before marriage, he should wait for a day or two before attempting coitus. However, in mod society, where the boy and the girl have gone out together and know each other, such lengthy preludes are unnecessary, though a certain amount of conversation is absolutely essential.

In the Prelude, the sense of sight, hearing and smell come into play if the partners are close together. It is most essential to create the mood for romance by listening to music, or enjoying a movie or doing anything together like dancing. The sense of touch plays a very important role in arousing the woman. In modern dancing, however, the women is not held in the man's arms, but the rapid rhythm and beat of the drums act as a strong sexual arouser. In conclusion, it is not possible to draw a hard and fast line between Prelude and Foreplay one blends imperceptibly with the other.
