Let us examine a few common fantasies about the penis, the King of Kings in the Kingdom of Sex the bigger the better; becomes erect instantaneously; hard as steel; when erect it is a battering ram of muscle engorged with blood; 'sprang out at her like an angry lion from its cage'; once erect it never gets exhausted; like a machine gun it can ,shoot' semen all night without being loaded.

THE BIGGER THE BETTER: Sex is the domninant urge in life. The urge for sex is stronger than hunger, stronger than fear. The male organ is the symbol of manliness. According to the noted author of Impotence in the Male, Wilhelm Stekel, 'A man is like his penis. The penis is an image of the entire man.' Is it any wonder that in the fantasyland of sex which the poets and authors of erotic novels, the hakims and the vaidyas portray, the size of the penis is the centre of attraction?

In the Kama Sutra Vatsyayana has classified the erect penis (lingam) according to its size into three different varieties: the Horse is the longest and thickest, about 22 centimetres; the Bull is of medium dimensions, about 15 centimetres; and the Rabbit is the shortest, about I11 centimetres. Ancient Indian erotic art has many statues with oversized male genital organs.

Our society admires tall men. 'How handsome and tall he is!' we say. We do not respect the short man unless he is a commanding politician like Napoleon. Largeness is respected in our affluent culture from childhood a jumbo doll, a jumbo cake, a jumbo sandwich, a jumbo ice cream, and now the jumbo jet.

In schools, colleges and in the shower rooms of clubs, the size of the penis matters. It is natural, therefore, that men are extremely conscious of their sexual dimensions right from childhood and later, as young men, feel inferior to the man with a bigger organ. If this inferiority complex persists, it might result in impotency.

Having described the size consciousness in our society, let us examine objectively the facts about sexual ability and the size of the male organ. Biologically, it is true that during evolution, nature tried to evolve huge monsters but they could not survive. Creatures like the dinosaurs are extinct today. One, therefore, needs to take a second look at our concept of jumbos. A world famous gynaecologist once observed that the most perfect women are short women. They usually go through pregnancy and labour like a shot, while tall women, in spite of their roomy pelvis, have problems. The same applies to short men.

Let me tell you about Charlie. He always worried about the small size of his organ and blamed nature for it. 'Doctor, if only primitive man had protested loudly when the Almighty distributed the male organs, individuals like me would not be left with such miniatures,' he said. 'Look at the horse, the donkey or the zebra. They all have what they wanted!' I listened attentively as Charlie continued, 'They say Smith has been gifted with the longest and biggest organ in our Company. Can a big penis be transplanted on me? I think it would be a simple operation compared to one on the heart, kidney or liver. Yet in fairness to my wife and girl friends, they have never complained about my size.' It was impressed on Charlie that it is not the length of the barrel but the magazine behind it that counts!

John, milton and quacks advertise and give drugs, massages and electrotherapy for increasing the size of the organ. The physical stimulation of the penis temporarily makes it semi erect or erect and its unfortunate owner believes that it has grown longer and stronger. However, disappointment is in store for him after a few hours, when the congestion of blood disappears and the organ becomes smaller, making him feel more dejected and depressed.

Size of the penis and the female partner: Does a female partner really need a 'horse' size penis as catalogued by Vatsyayana for her sexual fulfilment and enjoyment in sex? The answer is a definite 'no' for most women. Your huge organ may be a showpiece in male dressingrooms and give a tremendous boost to your ego but you will be surprised to know that when it come to sex, the majority of women are least concerned about the size of your penis or testes. At the height of her passion, a woman is so self centred that she is not bothered whether it is ten or twenty centimetres long. Undoubtedly, there are a few women who because of the propaganda by the media believe that the bigger it is, the better. A huge battering ram can be a source of discomfort and pain to the woman, if she is not well lubricated. In fact, some of her most enjoyable moments occur when the male has ejaculated and the erection has partially died down. It is not generally realised that, in satisfying a woman completely, it is not the penis alone but the tongue and the index finger which play a dominant role. I have known cases where individuals with a huge penis have left women dissatisfied.

BECOMES ERECT INSTANTANEOUSLY: Modern science has given us gadgets like the electric light, fan, heater, radio, TV, which usually respond instantaneously on pressing a button. Our culture has made us believe that a man should also respond immediately with pushbutton frequency! Unfortunately it is not so. Your tube light, after some use, does not light immediately if the starter is defective. Your radio does not work if one of the valves has burnt out or there is a loose contact in the circuit. Your car can conk out on the road because of a faulty condenser. You accept all these philosophically. After all, something can always go wrong with gadgets sometimes. What about your own gadget? Can't something go wrong with it occasionally? Why become anxious if an erection does not come on? The world has not come to an end! You were perhaps tired, preoccupied or worried about the office.

As age advances, and particularly after the mid thirties, the erective response does not take place through excitement alone, as in youth. You may require direct physical stimulation by your female partner. Accept it as a normal physiological process of ageing. Don't pull the alarm chain of anxiety and think that you have become old and impotent. On the other hand, Nature has given you a sexual bonus. You may be slow to 'rise' but you will take longer to 'come'. Do you know that your partner is not interested in an immediate erection but is likely to be disturbed by instantaneous discharge, the quick on the trigger mechanism of youth, which leaves her high and dry and unsatisfied?

HARD AS STEEL: Our culture makes all men believe that their penis when erect should be as hard as steel or like a rock. Men are deeply conscious about the hardness of their organ. They usually hold the erect penis in their hand and feel anxious if the hardness is not to their satisfaction and the penis becomes soft as the erection dies down. The penis is not meant for drilling holes into steel columns it has merely to enter the vaginal cavity. It may surprise you to know that even a semi erect or a soft penis can get into a vagina of a woman. A certain degree of hardness, however, is necessary to deflorate a virgin. Otherwise women do not relish rods of steel or ramming machines during intercourse. In fact, many find it uncomfortable or even painful. Stephen Vizinczey vividly brings out this theme in In Praise of Older Women: 'Don't leave' she said when we first came, 'I like to feel him small.' SIZE OF THE TESTES: Like the size of the penis, the size of the testes is a source of perpetual worry to penis/testes conscious men. They perpetually keep looking in the mirror at the size of their organs and the smallness of their testes. It is popularly believed that the male with small sized testes is at disadvantage sexually. Similarly, if the scrotum is not tight but hangs loosely, it is believed to be a sign of diminished potency. The adolescent should be told that the size of the testes or the elasticity of the scrotal skin has nothing to do with sexuality. Only in cases where both testes are removed after an injury or severe infection or cancer can impotency result. Even in such cases, the use of the male hormone can restore potency. I repeat once again that the size of the testes, whether they are small, medium or large, has no relation with potency at all and matters little where intercourse is concerned. POSITION OF THE TESTES: Nature's anatomical arrangement of the left testis being one centimetre lower than the right testis causes sexual anxiety to many laymen. They feel that their left gland has lost its elasticity and hangs loosely. Persistent worry along such lines may obsess a person so much that he may even become impotent.
