Love and Sex

Sex is very often associated with love. When this applies, sex for many people is all the better. It is not essential, however, for the two to go together. People can love without sex. And people can have sex without love. Upon the question of morality we feel no more qualified to speak than others. But within the field of medicine, and sexual medicine in particular, there is no need for the two phenomena to coincide, and there is absolutely no reason for any person to feel guilt, shame, confusion or anything else, if both feelings do not occur in the same person at the same time.

Love is the most sublime of emotion whilst sex is merely the act of reproduction. There can be sex without love, what is popularly called recreational sex. However, the best and most sublime form of sexual union can only takes place if love is present as well: and then, as Milton said of Adam and Eve, we may experience the supreme of joy of being 'Imparadised in one another's arms.
